ZitatAlles anzeigenDETROIT, MI - Suzuki has been undergoing a growth spurt as of late; 2004 saw the addition of the compact Forenza and midsize Verona sedans to the model lineup, and for 2005 the company further expands with the Suzuki Reno five-door hatchback. Reno? As in Reno, Nev., a town known for being the "Biggest Little City in the World"? It may very well be appropriate nomenclature; for while the Reno is priced diminutively it includes appealing features that may help it to stand out in the crowded compact economy hatchback segment.
Priced from $13,000 to $15,000, the 2005 Suzuki Reno is equipped to compete with the likes of the Chevrolet Aveo, the Ford Focus, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia Spectra and the Scion xA and xB. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, a stereo with cassette and CD players, cruise control, power door locks, power mirrors, tilt steering wheel, floor mats and a timed rear window defroster. But what's unusual are the upscale touches that we don't often see in this vehicle class, including steering wheel controls for the audio system, heated exterior mirrors, 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, a center passenger adjustable rear headrest, dual height and lumbar adjustments for the driver's seat and front underseat storage bins. Options include a power sunroof, leather interior upholstery and front fog lamps. On the safety front, the Reno provides four-wheel disc brakes, with an optional ABS augmented by electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).
A 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that makes 126 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque powers the 2005 Suzuki Reno. It doesn't quite match up to the strength provided by the Ford Focus or Hyundai Elantra, but bests both Scions. Power is routed to the front wheels through either the standard five-speed manual or the optional four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is not terribly impressive, rated at 21 mpg in the city with the automatic and up to 30 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission. We think small cars should do significantly better than a Buick Century on this front, and the Suzuki Reno does not.
However, the five-door 2005 Suzuki Reno is a nice-looking vehicle inside and out, thanks in part to styling by Ital Design in Italy. Exhibiting pleasing proportions and arched wheelwells that recall recent Audis, the Suzuki Reno has a distinctly European flair. Thanks to the rear hatchback and the 60/40 split folding rear seats the Reno offers cargo-hauling flexibility. The cabin is smartly designed, with fake metal trim and metallic gauge rings adding a bit of upscale ambience. Surprisingly, leather is available, though you're forced to take the automatic transmission when the Suzuki Reno is specified with cowhides.
Thanks to its relationship with General Motors, and by association South Korea's GM-Daewoo organization, Suzuki is planning to ambitiously expand its stable to achieve 200,000 annual sales in the U.S. by 2007. Inexpensive Korean cars like the Forenza, Reno and Verona have filled out Suzuki's product lineup this year, complementing the Aerio, Grand Vitara, Vitara and XL-7. Fortified by an attractive warranty that covers the powertrain for seven years or 100,000 miles, in addition to three years of roadside assistance coverage, the 2005 Suzuki Reno may be just the vehicle for the young-at-heart and low-of-cash.
